Hakluyt@400: The Richard Hakluyt Quatercentenary Programme, October to December 2016

This year is the 400th anniversary of the death of Richard Hakluyt and will be marked by a programme of events at Oxford, and at Hakluyt’s parish of Wetheringsett in Suffolk.

Two free exhibitions in Oxford will run from October to December 2016. On the afternoon of Friday 14 October, ‘Hakluyt and Geography in Oxford 1550–1650’ will be launched at Christ Church with a symposium on Renaissance scientific instruments and a reception. On Friday 28 October, ‘The World in a Book: Hakluyt and Renaissance Discovery’ at the Bodleian will be launched by lectures and a reception. One of the greatest treasures of the library, the Codex Mendoza, once owned by Hakluyt, will be included in this exhibition. Details of these events follow below:

Friday 14 October, in the Upper Library, Christ Church, St Aldates, Oxford, OX1 1DP at 4.30 to 6.30 p.m. General introduction on Christ Church in the sixteenth century by Judith Curthoys, the Christ Church Archivist, followed by a symposium on scientific instruments in Hakluyt’s time, with papers by our President, Jim Bennett, and Dr Stephen Johnston (Museum of the History of Science). A reception will follow.

Friday 28 October, in the Weston Library Lecture Theatre, Bodleian Library, Broad Street, Oxford, OX1 3BG at 5.30 to 6.30 p.m. An introductory lecture by Dr William Poole (New College) on Hakluyt and the books on display in the Bodleian’s exhibition. A reception will follow.
This is free of charge and open to all who are interested, but a place must be reserved if you wish to attend. The Bodleian asks that you please e-mail: rsvp@bodleian.ox.ac.uk , saying you will be attending and giving your postal address, so they can send a formal printed invitation.


There will be a two-day interdisciplinary and international conference, ‘Hakluyt and the Renaissance Discovery of the World’, on Thursday 24 November at the Bodleian Library and on Friday 25 November 2016 at Christ Church, Oxford, for which Hakluyt Society members will be able to register to attend at a special rate of £60. The keynote speaker on 24 November will be the prominent historian Professor Joyce Chaplin of Harvard, whose lecture will be followed by a reception at Christ Church for all conference attendees. On 25 November a free public lecture, ‘Voyages, Traffiques, Discoveries’, will be given by historian and broadcaster Michael Wood, at the Examination Schools.

Commemorative Service at Hakluyt’s parish church

At 10.30 a.m. on Sunday 27 November, there will be a commemorative service in All Saints Church, Wetheringsett, Suffolk, IP15 5PH, Hakluyt’s parish, which will be led by the Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, with the dedication of a stone plaque in memory of Richard Hakluyt. This will be followed by a buffet lunch in the Village Hall with a programme of music and readings. There will be an opportunity for small groups of Hakluyt Society members to visit the surviving part of Hakluyt’s former rectory.
